The Details

OPTICAL MICROGRAPHS OF FRAGMENTS #1 AND #2 These digital images known as optical micrographs were produced by Los Alamos Laboratory scientist Bob Sebring.  Fragment #1 created an international stir with its nineteen alternating layers of silver and copper reported to be only 0.015 inch thick.  The fractional equivalent of 0.015 is less than 1/64 inch.  A final study of Fragment #1’s cross section by Los Alamos Laboratory determined the fragment portion tested to be 0.0017 less than the original reported.  This translates to a final fragment thickness of 0.0133 inch.  Fragment #2 from the same source exhibits eight alternating layers.

An artist did claim to be the source of the material.  Did you test his samples to see if they were different?  "No, it cost us $1,000 to make one test, we couldn't afford to do another." We did go to the most important room at the museum.....
